Behind the ShieldAbout the ShowJournalists Scott Symons and Mary Kay Ross investigate Ontario's unique character in this subjective portrait of the province and its concerns. Controversial issues introduced by the hosts include immigration and multiculturalism, the Americanization of Canadian culture, Ontario's Anglo-Saxon heritage, and urban development's lack of character. Program formats vary - from informal studio discussions between Symons and Ross to short dramatizations, visits to different parts of the province, and interviews with distinguished Ontarian guests. The latter include the provincial NDP's former leader, Stephen Lewis, economist John Kenneth Galbraith, and historian Donald Creighton. Throughout the programs, the hosts attempt to heighten a sense of Ontario's identity and to understand the forces that shape it. |

Prisoners of GravityAbout the ShowPrisoners of Gravity, the acclaimed comic book and science fiction news magazine series, is not television. It's the world's orbital oracle. It's the future now. Trapped in geosynchronous orbit, unable to escape the planet he's convinced is hurtling toward self-destuction, Commander Rick (Rick Green) commandeers the airwaves to transmit his weekly pirate broadcasts. Assisted by his on-board computer assistant Nan-Cy (his trusty NANo-CYbernetic 3000 computer) aboard the Reality-1 Communications Satellite, Commander Rick explores crucial issues of the late twentieth century in the language of the faithful: science fiction, comics, computers, fantasy, and horror, all respectfully recognized in the series as adult art forms. He interviews these genres' writers, artists, and filmmakers, focusing on a different theme in each program: politics, war, fears, dreams, addictions, children, new worlds, and even the current popularity of dinosaurs. |
Young people of the '80s talk about what matters to them.
CopeAbout the ShowCope is a probing series of half-hour programs that talk to today's youth. Host John De Lazzer's relaxed, informal approach encourages parents and teens to talk freely about such issues as birth control, suicide, the stereotyping of sex roles, leaving home and depression. Guest experts recommend workable methods of coping with the problems of adolescence. The format - a combination of interviews, discussion, and documentary - is sure to fascinate adults, but more importantly, it will successfully reach a most difficult audience - today's teenager. |
